Alternative iTunes/Facebook Promotion

Techcrunch has an interesting little piece on the Facebook/iTunes Back-to-School promotion that’s going on right now. Beginning yesterday and continuing for the next ten weeks, the two companies are giving away one million 25-song music playlists each week.

Marshall Kirkpatrick presents a pretty interesting alternative to the current promotion:

Imagine if the promotion did something like this instead: instead of an anonymously compiled mix tape of random songs, each week Facebook users could download for free 25 songs compiled by a notable expert in that week’s genre. Perhaps that expert could even do a live streaming conversation midweek talking about why they chose the songs they did and answering listener questions moderated by an interviewer. Now that would be interesting.
